Red is the collar as Cork go back to the future with new jersey

Cork footballer Tommy Walsh (left) and hurlers Brian Hayes and Shane Barrett model the new Cork jersey, which will be worn from 2027.

When Mayo ended 75 years of hurt to win this year’s All-Ireland SFC title, much was made of how their white kit harked back to that worn by the last successful side in 1951.

While the new Cork jersey doesn’t engage in anything as dramatic as switching to the white worn by the successful 1973 and 2010 football sides, there is a subtle change which nods to the last hurling victory.

Traditionally, the collar on the Rebels’ jersey was white but, back in 2004, manufacturers O’Neills went in a different direction by changing it to red – the Liam MacCarthy Cup was regained that year and then retained in 2005. You might have heard that that remains the county’s last senior victory.

The red collar is back on the newest offering, launched on Thursday, while there is a red pattern featuring elements from the county crest including the ship – the Cork motto translates as ‘A safe harbour for ships’ – and the North and South Gates.

“We’ve leaned into some of the things that we believe Cork GAA stands for and is universally associated with – strength, identity and power,” said county board secretary/CEO Kevin O’Donovan.

“There’s such a rich heritage across both codes and we wanted the inclusion of the county crest to reflect that. We look forward to seeing our greatest ambassadors, our players, donning our beloved 'blood and bandage' as we approach 2027 with hope and unity.”

An official in-store launch will take place in the Sports Direct outlet at Mahon Point on Thursday, October 29, when fans will have the opportunity to meet inter-county players from 5-6.30pm. The new strip will be available through the outlets of sponsors Sports Direct and on oneills.com.

Leonard Brassell, managing director of Sports Direct Ireland, said: “We are excited to launch the new 2027 Cork jersey and continue our partnership with Cork GAA.

“We know that tradition and heritage are hugely important to the people and players of Cork and these are values that Sports Direct shares with Cork GAA.”

A change jersey, and new training kit, are expected to be launched in the coming weeks.
