IN an era where technology seamlessly integrates into every aspect of our lives, from banking to retail, there’s an undeniable scope for technology to revolutionise the community pharmacy sector in Ireland.

Community pharmacies, traditionally seen as a key pillar of healthcare in local communities, are now at a crossroads. Surveys show they are trusted more than any other profession in Ireland, and pharmacies are deeply embedded within the fabric of Irish society, with more than half the population attending a community pharmacy at least once a month.

However, to evolve into the nexus for primary care, community pharmacies must embrace a credible technology platform that not only enhances their operational efficiencies, but also fosters effective communication with their patients.

The trust placed in Irish community pharmacies is not misplaced. They are more than just dispensaries; pharmacy staff are healthcare advisers, a first point of contact, and an integral part of the healthcare system.

This deep-seated trust, combined with the widespread accessibility of pharmacies, positions them ideally to become primary care hubs. The transition, however, hinges on their ability to integrate modern technology into their operations.

In industries such as banking and take-home hospitality, customer transactions have largely shifted to digital platforms, predominantly through apps. This has not only been seamless, but has brought about improved customer experience and operational efficiency. For instance, the banking industry has witnessed a significant shift with the advent of online banking and mobile apps, allowing customers to manage their finances at their fingertips. Similarly, the hospitality industry has seen a surge in online ordering, with customers preferring the convenience of ordering from their homes, using apps.

This digital transformation has set a precedent that the community pharmacy sector can no longer afford to ignore.

The need for technology in community pharmacies extends beyond just customer convenience. It encompasses better inventory management, streamlined dispensing processes, and enhanced communication channels. These technological advancements can significantly reduce waiting times, prevent medication errors, and ensure a smoother workflow; thereby increasing overall efficiency.

The experience of PharmacyConnect in delivering white-labelled apps for Irish pharmacies exemplifies the potential of technology in transforming the sector. The platform allows pharmacies to establish their patients’ requirements and handle other aspects of the patient journey efficiently.

It is notable that most community pharmacies that have adopted PharmacyConnect have seen a substantial increase in digital transactions since launching the service, with some now conducting nearly 50% of their prescription business through their pharmacy app. This not only demonstrates the feasibility of such a transition, but also underscores the willingness of the public to engage with digital healthcare solutions.

In considering the role of technology, it’s crucial to recognise the need for community pharmacies to achieve more with fewer resources, and to be acknowledged for doing so.

As a significant portion of pharmacy revenue is derived from State schemes, it’s essential to align ongoing initiatives, such as the Irish Pharmacy Union’s campaign for restoration of pharmacy fees, with tangible operational efficiencies at the pharmacy level. The increasing strain on public finances (particularly as it pertains to healthcare) necessitates the adoption of technology, not just as a means to enhance current profitability, but as a strategic measure to secure the future of pharmacies.

Efficient use of technology stands as a safeguard against future financial pressures, ensuring pharmacies remain viable and competitive in an evolving healthcare landscape.

However, the journey to a fully integrated digital pharmacy system is not without challenges. A primary concern is ensuring data security and patient confidentiality, which are paramount in healthcare. Pharmacies must invest in secure, robust platforms that safeguard patient data while providing a seamless patient journey.

Additionally, there is a need for training and support to help pharmacists and staff adapt to new technologies.

Furthermore, the integration of technology in pharmacies could pave the way for better healthcare outcomes. For instance, digital platforms can facilitate easier monitoring of medication adherence, provide reminders for prescription refills, and offer personalised healthcare advice. This level of engagement can significantly improve patient outcomes and satisfaction.

As Ireland moves to a more integrated healthcare system, community pharmacies, with their unique position of trust and accessibility, can play a pivotal role.

However, to realise this potential, they must now adapt to the technological advancements that have already been shaping other industries.

Incorporating modern technology into Irish community pharmacies is no longer a luxury; it’s an imperative, and it’s happening now.

This adoption marks a significant move towards better healthcare delivery, elevated patient outcomes, and maintaining the relevance and indispensability of pharmacies in a swiftly changing healthcare environment.
