In April, Garda management in the Cork City Division amalgamated Carrigaline and Douglas into one unit, and the units covering Bishopstown and Ballincollig into another.

Dublin and Tipperary were the two highest-grossing counties for the speed vans, with Cork and Kildare following closely behind.

Examples of the high speeds detected yesterday include a motorist travelling at 78km/h in a 60km/h zone on the R639 in Glanmire.

Shortly before 6.30am, Gardaí and emergency services were alerted after a male in his 70s was found unresponsive on a local road

Videos circulating of the incident show around ten masked men damaging cars and a house with weapons.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said: "I can confirm a woman(60s) has passed away as a result of a road traffic incident, that occurred on Pophams Road, Farranree, Cork on Tuesday 23 June, 2025."

Speaking to The Echo, assistant commissioner for organised and serious crime with An Garda Síochána, Angela Willis said that the scale of sentencing should highlight the severity of the crime to those who both supply drugs for recreational use, but also for those who use drugs recreationally.

A spokesperson from An Garda Síochána has confirmed that gardaí in Mayfield on the northside of Cork city were alerted to an incident this evening at a residence in Glounthaune.

Gardaí responded to a report of an assault in Mayfield on Saturday night at approximately 10.30pm.

The road currently remains closed to traffic to allow for a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators,  and local road diversions are currently in place.

Chief Superintendent Tom Myers said: 'There’s not a division around the country that doesn’t need extra resources, and I’m no exception to that.'

The June 6 graduation from the Garda College in Templemore saw three garda graduates — known as “probationers” — assigned to Cork city, while two other gardaí were transferred to the division. However, the association has said the Cork city division also saw three frontline gardaí retire and two receive promotions, cancelling out the five new arrivals.

More than 3,600 people in Cork have been penalised for driving on a provisional licence without being accompanied by a full licence holder.

A senior member of An Garda Síochána said work will commence on the new garda station in Macroom, which will also serve as the new HQ for Cork county, in the coming months.
